Here follows a short summary of the film:German born Rosalie is the faithful wife of an American pilot once stationed in Bavaria, and the mother of seven children, living in a small town in Arkansas. So dedicated is Rosalie to her large family that she has developed a credit-card scam and forges cheques on a regular basis to furnish them all with an extravagant lifestyle. To relieve her conscience, Rosalie, a good catholic, daily confesses her credit abuse to her local priest. But her misuse of various credit cards and her rubber checks are bound to catch up with her. She buys her eldest daughter a computer for her birthday, and discovers the power of computers and electronic mail. In her hands they become wildly potent consumer weapons as she invents phony companies and reveals access codes that enable her to trump the whole system. The German language is very similar to the Dutch language. It was really weird for me to suddenly hear Alex pray and sing "happy birthday" in German. I had only heard him speak English up till then. I wonder if he still knows a few German words? Anyway "Schatzi" became my "Schatje" after seeing this film. A funny element in the film is the family's awkward, ritualistic way to set the dinner table, and watching TV commercials together. Rosalie's life motto is without a doubt "shop till you drop". She spends money like there is no tomorrow and at the same time shoplifts, bounces checks, cheats credit card companies and even plunders her own children's bank accounts to stay out of debt. click here to read some reviews on the film
